When do stores on the Boardwalk close for the 2017 season? I'm looking at coming down to OC in mid-to-late October during a weekend. Thanks!

Hi.  You'll still find plenty of stores open every weekend in October since there is an event nearly every weekend that month.  Plus Thrasher's Fries and Fisher's Popcorn, the Kite Loft, and many of the seasonal favorite spots like Shenanigans  will be open as well.  However if the weather is extremely bad (cold, snow, stormy) there may not be as many.

You can check out all events in Ocean City at http://www.ococean.com/events

I am staying on 62nd Street next weekend. I have a Maryland fishing license. I'm wondering if there are designated streets that allow surf fishing, and what times this is permitted. Thanks in advance, Insiders!

Provided you have a valid tidal saltwater license, you can fish on the beach from 5:30 pm until 10 pm or from 6 am to 9:30 am.  All streets are open to fishing while the lifeguards are off duty.

Surf fishing is permitted in Ocean City. However, be sure you are not within 50 yards of swimmers or of anyone on the beach between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Surf fishing is also allowed on Assateague Island, except on guarded beaches and in designated surfing zones. Please visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for more information.

Anglers fishing in Ocean City, MD will need to purchase a saltwater fishing license. Oyster Bay Tackle is now selling the MD licenses and have the boat stickers. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal waters of Ocean City. Thus if you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good to go!

Anglers can also purchase the license online. The license you want to choose is “Bay and Coastal Sport”. You can either choose a year-round or 7-day. Click on Login and follow the instructions. Choose if you have ever had a license of any kind in MD or if you have never had one. If in doubt, choose “Use ID and date of birth” and go from there. If you buy a boat license, for $50 everyone on your boat can go fishing without a license. If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat License, you don’t have to buy a license, but you do have to register online.

This is free and can also be done over the phone during daytime hours 1-855-855-3906.

Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license, it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA license you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each state can “try” to figure out “how many” fish are being caught in their own individual states.

If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will be the “Oceanic Pier” or “Ocean Pier” as they have a Blanket Pier License. Ocean City now has two free fishing zones. The bulkhead from 2nd to 4th Street (Chicago Ave) and the Northside Park at 125th Street. You do not need a license in these two places but you do need a “free registry”. This is free and can also be done over the phone during daytime hours of 7am-7pm at 1-855-855-3906. If you go fishing on a party or charter boat you do not need a license or free registry. You can also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license.

Contact Info

If you have any questions regarding Maryland’s sport fishing license requirements, you may contact Fisheries Service via e mail: customerservice@dnr.state.md.us or by calling 410-656-9526.

Following is the fee schedule: Senior License (year round) – $5.00 Resident License (year round) – $15.00 Resident License (7-day) – $6.00 Non-resident (year round) – $22.50 Non- resident (7-day) – $12.00 Pleasure Boat Decal (covers everyone on boat – year round) – $50.00 Commercial Fishing Pier License (year round) – $290.00 No license is required for: Boat decal passengers Those fishing in “free fishing” areas Those fishing from their waterfront properties Anglers under 16 years old Anglers fishing on a licensed charter, party or guide boat Anglers fishing commercially under a valid license In the Coastal Bays of MD, you do NOT need a license to crab or clam.

We are staying in North Ocean City on Assawoman Drive. How far to boardwalk area? If we need to drive, is there parking nearby? Are there any recommended restaurants in North Ocean City? Are there beach chair rentals as well?

Welcome to less crowded North Ocean City.  The Boardwalk is 10 miles away - head south on Ocean Highway.  There is plenty of parking by the Boardwalk; you can also take the bus for $3 per person per day.  There are bus stops about every 4 blocks on Ocean Highway.  There are chair and umbrella stands about every 5 blocks - they are still open and renting through the end of September.

Our favorite places to eat are Tequila Mockingbird, Cafe Mirage, Uber Bagels (best bagels ever!!), the Bayside Skillet, Ky West and Macky's.

Are there any lighthouses in Ocean City or within driving distance?

There is an inland lighthouse in Fenwick Island that you can see from the street.  It is on 146th Street.  Here is a link to the lighthouse.  It is interesting to see.  https://fenwickislandlighthouse.org/

There are also some historic naval submarine towers in Fenwick Island.  They can be seen from Ocean Highway driving north from Fenwick Island to Bethany Beach.  An article on them can be found here: http://shorebread.com/2013/01/24/the-watch-towers-that-line-the-de-coast-signs-of-world-war-ii/

For a week-long vacation with a family of five (with three young children), I'm wondering if there's a general budget that other families in the past have been able to stick to. Thanks!

I always rent a condo when we go for a week, that way we don't have to go out to eat as much. There are 3 of us and we usually spend around $1500...that's on dinner, groceries, gas to get there & back, activities, shopping & adult drinks.  Eating out is going to be your biggest cost, especially if you love seafood.  Here are my favorite & inexpensive food spots:

Pizza Tugos (they deliver, ask for the special)

On the Bay Seafood- 42nd & coastal..outdoor dining, perfect for steamed crabs & crab legs

Fat Daddys 216 S. Baltimore Ave. (they deliver till 4am, The Outback is delicious)

Dead Freddies 64th street (The kids will love it here!)

Tony's Pizza, boardwalk & 1st street. They sell by the slice.

Laytons 16th & Coastal highway, They have good breakfast or you can get some donuts & muffins to go.

Fractured Prune -several locations, these are my favorite donuts ever!

Anthony's Deli 33rd street. Their tuna sub is amazing, great for lunch or light dinner.

Brass Balls (boardwalk & 11th/12th)- Their crab imperial burger is awesome.

Have fun!

It's our first time visiting OC later this month! I was wondering what part of the beach would be less crowded? Closer to the boardwalk, or further away?

The beach is usually less crowded up North away from the boardwalk where the larger condos are, around 80th-100th Street. It's not as wide there and depending on how many people are staying in those condos it could be crowded.  And depending on where you are staying, it might be a pain to lug your beach stuff up there.

The boardwalk beach section is much wider and offers more room even if it is a bit crowded.  Have fun!

If the weather is decent you can generally rent bikes. You definitely can rent them in early October and on weekends in late October. For weekdays after Columbus Day I'd call ahead. This page lists several places where you can rent bikes with their contact info.

Children 42" tall or less can ride the beach bus for free. Everyone else pays $3/day. Exact fare is required. Find out more here.

I plan to wake up early each day to put our canopy on the beach. Is there a time of day where this is allowed?

Is street parking available near 15th Street during September? We are bringing another car in addition to the one we'll have in our allotted spot.

Hi Bobbi, I'd make sure if you park your car on 15th to keep it there. you can try and get a spot next to Harrison Hall on the street. Just if you don't plan on moving the additional car and just the one you have at your condo then that's fine.
