My family will be vacationing here in July and we will be celebrating my son's 3rd birthday. We're looking to get a custom cake made. Any suggestions for a baker?

Fenwick Bakery does a great job as does Harris Teeter - both are in Fenwick Island, DE.  I would call Fenwick Island Bakery first, as they do very custom work.

Can you rent bikes and kayaks in Ocean City? If so, where?

Yes you can rent both bikes and kayaks.

For bikes you can find a list of rental places here. You can also rent them weekly from PMI rentals at 126th Street.

For kayaks there are also lots of places. Take a look at this page for some kayaking info. A few places I like are Ayers Creek Adventures, Assateague Outfitters, 67th Street Paddle Cove, and Coastal Kayak.

My best friend and I are going down to OC the first week of June for a few days. We lucked out and got to borrow a friend's condo on 39th St. so we can save money. We're excited to walk along the boardwalk and try the local food. How much cash should we plan to spend there? Are the prices super inflated? Thank you!

Prices are not any higher than most tourist areas. Since you are in a condo you can easily eat in or cook some meals which can save you some money. The bottom line is that you could spend the day on the beach and buy groceries and eat in and spend no more than you would spend at home.

Here are some thoughts on other costs and ways to save money:

You can have a great time on the beach (free) and boardwalk (free) and at any of OC's many free events or spend less than $10 on souvenirs or snacks. For free events look at these places for details on them: (1) Free family Fun, (2) Ocean City is Free. Parking is free at your condo as is side street parking in this area of town. You can take the bus anywhere for $3 per day . Amusement Parks will run you $20 to $40. If you go in the afternoon you can get a wrist band good until about 6pm to ride all you want for about $20. Baja Go Carts has a similar 2 hour wrist band for $40. Tour boats and other entertainment items are $10 to $20 per person.

How much you spend on food really depends on your tastes. You can eat out on pizza and subs and a basic breakfast (e.g., Dunkin Donuts) for about $25/day per person. If you go to a seafood restaurant it will likely cost you about $30-$40 per person for a nice dinner with drinks and a seafood entree. You can eat decent food at a cheap price. OC's got some great pizza and sub places including Lombardi's, Fat Daddy'sBilly's, Anthony's Deli, Anthony's Carryout. You can also get decent sandwiches and bar food at some of the local bars for a reasonable price. Try Longboards, Harborside, OC Brewing, or Backshore Brewing. If you want seafood, but want to save some bucks, try carryout. Phillip's has a great carryout menu, and if you like chicken, they usually have a great fried chicken deal too!

You can also get all kinds of information and information on money saving deals and coupons once you get to town form the Visitors Center at the south end of Convention Center at 40th Street. There are lots of money saving coupons available.  Check out the Sunny Day Guide - Request Hardcopy (fee) or View online (free)for lots of coupons. The Visitors Guide.

There are many places that could match your description, but I suspect you are talking about the Ocean Gallery (pictured above) which is located on the boardwalk at 2nd Street.

I want to take a solo day trip to the Ocean City boardwalk on May 14. When is the best time to arrive to avoid traffic/crowds or minimize traffic/crowds?

May 14 is a Saturday, so there may be a bot ore traffic around the Bay Bridge, but since it is early in the season, it should not be too bad. It is about a 2-1/2 to 3 hour trip from Bethesda to OC. To avoid traffic, I'd leave Bethesda no later than 8am and return leaving OC after 8pm. The boardwalk and beach will not be crowded then, but the boardwalk will get busier after about 4pm and will be most crowded around 8pm.

We are planning a trip to OC from June 3-5. What is good to do with a 3-year-old?

Helys I'll be there at the same time. For your 3-yr old try Trimpers rides as they are geared towards smaller children. Also, if the weather is great you'll always have the beach. So pack a lunch and enjoy the sand for the day on the beach.

Head over to Assateague Island Visitor Center and explore. This is a great rainy day activity.

If your hotel has a pool then you can spend some time there to.

I'm a first-timer to OC. We're shooting for the first week in June. We are staying on 39th St. From what I can tell on the map, we can get to the beach pretty quick, but it looks like the main action of the boardwalk is down near the inlet, about 10 to 15 blocks down from 39th. That's a long way to haul stuff! Is there any way we can drive down closer to the boardwalk and park somewhere? If so, where can we park? Thank you!

The beach is great anywhere (39th Street is a great area), so there is really no reason to move from near your place unless you want to walk to the shops, arcades, and restaurants on the boardwalk. You can visit these in the evening if you want. However, if you want to be near the boardwalk and all the action, there are lots of municipal parking lots near the south end of town. You can see a list of them and find out all about parking in OC by looking here.

What hotels on the boardwalk still allow smoking on the balcony? I'm going with a non-smoker and just need a space to go outside the room and smoke.

There are very few motels and hotels that allow smoking on their property. On the boardwalk the only one I know of that has balconies is the Quality Inn Boardwalk Hotel (410.289.4401) on 16th Street. I believe the Plim Plaza (800.837.3587) on 2nd Street also still has some smoking rooms, but their rooms do not have balconies. Here are a few other hotels off the boardwalk that may still allow smoking in some of their rooms:

Quality Inn & Suites - (410.289.1234) Oceanfront at 33rd Street

Fenwick Inn - (410.250.1100)Bayblock at 138th Street

Sea Bay Hotel - (800.888.2229) Bayblock at 61st Street. Smoking is not allowed in rooms, but all rooms have balconies where smoking is allowed

Have fun in OC!
