Upon leaving the Crepe and Omlet Place on Coastal Highway, I looked across the street and noticed a dome structure attached to a home. This structure could accomodate a telescope. What's the story?

An interesting question, and a tough one to answer. Here is the story:

The house on 78th Street was modified by Fritz Hofman in the late 1980s or early 1990s to add an observatory. He installed a 16-foot long refractor telescope with a 12-inch lens. It weighs in at over 1 ton. At the time it was installed it was one of the largest privately owned telescopes in the country. It may still be. About 20 years ago the telescope cost over $30,000 and the modifications to the house were another $30,000. I believe Mr. Hoffman owns this house and telescope.

Thanks for an interesting question.

It is also pretty in the winter when the lights are on.  I have never been fortunate enough to see it open though.

The house/castle on the road behind the green turtle (Captains Quarters road off Jamestown road) that Sava stated is right across the canal from our Ocean City home/  It's really awesome to look at when the lights are on in the evening and reflected off the water.

The dome actually still retracts and is in working order I hear.  The observatory would make a great bedroom for cool summer nights!

There is also a castle-like house a few blocks behind the Greene Turtle - complete with turrets and everything.
