Hello! I'm coming to the OCMD on May 2011 to work there with my friends. Where should I rent a room? And what kind of job is preferable in OCMD in summertime?

I have spent the last 5 or so Thanksgivings down in OC with my family, including 4 kids, now ages 9 to 16. We always have a great time.

Some fun things to do are: Got to Marty's Playland at the south end of the boardwalk, walk on the beach or boardwalk, go to the Winterfest of Lights at Northside park, play indoor mini golf, rent a bike or surrey and ride on the boardwalk, try out the new Visitor's Center at the entrance to Assateague Island.

You can find lots more great information at these two threads which speak about TG in OC:

William,

Wow, the other Insider's gave some great recommendations.

I'm going to add a couple (you'll have a full weekend for sure!):

Breakfast - Clarion Breakfast Buffet, great price and wonderful selections.
Lunch - Blue Ox, wonderful menu and offer off season specials.
Dinner - Seacrets, to give you a taste of one of OC's landmarks.

Activities:
Mini Golf - OC tourist favorite.
Boardwalk - Bicycle the entire length (rent on in OC).
Shopping - West OC has great outlets as well as all the wonderful shops
                       along Coastal Highway.
Christmas Shopping - There is a great store around 32nd Street & Coastal
Highway.  Gets you into that holiday spirit!

Don't forget you will be on the tail end of Restaurant Week.  Visit this website for all the specifics:  http://www.oceancityrestaurantweek.com

Enjoy your mini-vacation!

I see benches on the Boardwalk have people's names on them, how do you or where do you contact to get information to have a name on a bench?

The Ocean City Public Works Department is responsible for the boardwalk and its benches. They run the program to dedicate the benches in memory or honor of someone. The cost is $1400 which purchases the bench and the plaque. You need to fill out a bench dedication form. You can get the form and more information by calling the Public Works Department at 410.524.0391.

Their website with more information is: http://oceancitymd.gov/Public_Works/benchdedication.html

Chris,

As a follow-up, your visit will coincide with Restaurant Week.  Please visit this site for additional information as well as participating restaurants.
http://www.oceancityrestaurantweek.com

In short, many local restaurants will offer a special fixed-price three course dinner menu for just $30 and/or a two course menu for $20 (tax, gratuity and alcohol not included) No passes, tickets or coupons are required. It is strongly recommended that you make advance reservations.

Thank you,
Anna G.

I'm interested in language. Are there any local slang terms that you use or hear frequently?

K,

Most of what I here, very similar to some of the Insider responses include:
   Boardwalk = Boards
   Ocean City = OC

Otherwise, not familiar with many local slang terms.  However, can totally agree with Bill; as a PA native, we always said "going to the shore" instead of "going to the ocean", must have lived too long in MD because I'm a convert - "goin' to de oshun"!.  Too funny...

Thank you,

We have been down to OC in December. The weather wasn't good and so I think the stores did not open on the boardwalk. What month in Spring do they start to open up and stay open later. We go down on Fridays and until we get there they are all closed. And like I said even if they were going to be open on the weekend, the weather was rainy and nothing was opened on Saturday. I know the Cruising weekend is in May, would they have things open then?

Rae,

We are in OC throughout the winter (Nov-Dec) and early spring (Mar-Apr) and you are correct that the open businesses vary based on the weather.  However, we never run into a situation where we can't find anything to do.

Indoor mini-golf is always open, and now Old Pro offers two separate locations which is great.

Arcades, we frequent the two located right on the boards near the inlet on almost EVERY visit.  Plus the Inlet parking lot is free of charge in off season!!!

Bowling - if you love this pasttime, definitely visit OC's alley.  It's located 72nd and Bayside.

Shopping - boardwalk shops are open on a reduced schedule, but they offer great sales when open.

As for Spring, I can personally recommend St. Patrick's weekend.  The town is fluttering with activity.  There is a parade that ends on 45th Street with a small festival (weekend before St. Pat's); Seacrets has a HUGE party with DJ Batman; and many other local spots offer specials and fun activities.  You can even get great hotel packages for the weekend festivities.  Check out Castle in the Sand, Princess Bayside, and Hilton.

Enjoy whatever time you visit OC - you are bound to have a fun, exciting, and activity abound time.

Thank you,
Anna G.
