The rocky areas you see are old jettys or groins that were build over the years to preserve the sand on the beach. Some of these (mostly wooden ones) were built as early as the 1920s. There are several rock ones you can find remains of in town including one around 47th Street and another around 60th Street. In Ocean City most of these jettys accumulate sand on the north side and erode sand on their south side.
The pattern of the boards may be a contributing factor to the ride, but it will probably improve over time. The particular design of the tram area of the wood was selected to enable the boardwalk to better withstand the loads presented by the tram and other vehicles so long term maintenance is reduced.

Savas gave you some great information
about the current Ocean City Airport. The airport was dedicated on May 23,
1960. Prior to that date, there were a few dirt and grass airstrips west of OC
in the Bishopville and Whaleyville area. Unfortunately, I have never been able
to pinpoint their locations. Here is a postcard of the OC Airport soon after it
opened.

Most, if not all, of the banner planes you see from the beach do not use Ocean
City Airport. Instead they use a private field, Bunting Field, that is just south
of the west end of Route 90.
The only airport in the area with commercial flights is the Salisbury
Airport, about 30 miles west of OC.
Historically there have been at least 2 airstrips in what is now Ocean City.
Near where the Gold Coast Mall is today, there was a single strip field from
the early 1950s to the early 1960s. The landing strip may have been paved. I
believe this was a private field used by the DuPont family who owned property
in that area at that time. You can see a picture of it below from 1957. In the
picture the words "No Landing" are painted on the runway, indicating
it is no longer in use.
There was also a airstrip and heliport on the site where Harbor Island
community is now located (at the west end of 14th Street). This was the site of
the famous Ship's Cafe. The airport was there in the early 1950s. By the mid
1950s the runways were gone, but a heliport opened in 1955 at the same
location. A picture of it from 1952 is shown below.

This is probably more info than you were looking for, but it was an interesting
question to answer. Thanks for the interesting question!
I've gone to OC for the past several years for Thanksgiving, and while I haven't traveled on Thanksgiving Day or the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I have paid attention to the traffic on hose days.It seems that the delays are relatively minor. A few minutes at the bay bridge and heavy though Cambridge and Easton where the traffic lights slow people down. However, unless there is an accident or other incident, you should be able to easily get through the Bay Bridge tolls and get to OC in 2 to 2.5 hours. If you are only going as far as Delmar/Salisbury you should be able to make it in about 2 hours or less. Times and traffic should be similar on both o f these days, perhaps a little heavier on Sunday.
Have a great, extra special Winterfest this year!

Route 90 enters OC at 62nd Street. You will turn right onto Coastal Highway (MD Route 528) and go 1.3 miles to the Convention Center. It will be on your right (bayside) at 40th Street. Look for the sign.
