This is our frist time to Ocean City and we are celebrating my son's 9th birthday. We are coming from Reisterstown, MD and are just staying the day. I want to know what is the best time to get there? Where do you park? Do you need beach umbrellas and chairs? Is there an area of the beach that has more to see than another? Any other info you can provide would be appreciated.

Best time to arrive, get there early so you have a full day to enjoy all that OC has to offer.

If you have beach chairs and umbrellas at home - bring along and save a little money in renting them.

Location - I would recommend driving all the way to the Inlet and parking at the Hugh T. Cropper lot.  There is a fee to park here:
Weekday and Weekend = $2.50 per hour
                   0 - 30 minutes              Free
                   31 - 40 minutes            $1.50
                   41 - 50 minutes            $2.00
                   51 minutes - 1 hour       $2.50
Additional Time            $.50 per 12 minutes
Note: Lost tickets will result in a maximum charge of $60.

Reason is there is so much to see and do at the Inlet.  Jolly Rogers, Trimper's, arcades, food spots, and you can catch the boardwalk tram at the Inlet and ride all the way to 27th Street to see all that the boards have to offer.

Happy 9th Birthday to your Son and have a great time in OC.

MANY condo owners restrict renting to those 25 years or older. I believe that the Capri has it in its bylaws and Long and Foster only rents to either a "defined family" or to groups with at least two people 25 or older. However, I read (comment from Grand Hotel manager) that due to a lawsuit settlement, hotels/motels must rent to anyone 18 years of age or older. Does anyone know where I can find the MD law that reflects this requirement? Is it specific to hotels and not privately owned condos? Is there any reason to be concerned that these age/family restrictions violate any MD fair housing or other rules? I own a condo in a bldg where many owners would like to put restrictions on rentals so that we only rent to families or older indivduals rather than groups of highschool or college age individuals. I find it hard to believe that so many companies and individuals would get this wrong but I need concrete evidence in order to get the board to seriously consider these restrictions. Thank you.

My best suggestion would be to contact the Town of OC for further assistance.  They can advise you on the specific law, or if not provide where you can go or who to contact for the specific details.

Your best bet is BayRunner Shuttles. They have several trips a day between OC and BWI for $104. The schedule is here. You can call them at 410.912.6000.

Are there any bay beaches that are more kid friendly (ie - shallow/no waves) that the kids could enjoy?

There are no public bay beaches in Ocean City.  However, much of the time, especially at low tide, the ocean side is not too rough. Often there is a large sandy area at low tide right along the water that is great for kids to play along.

The boardwalk shops are full of OC apparel.  But my favorite location to purchase polos is Greene Turtle.  It has the GTOC logo, but their apparel is fabulous, lasts forever and is always true to size.

Most of the local restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. will carry OC apparel for sale as well.

Another alternative is one of the local golf courses.  There are several in OC and they mostly all have a small shop on the premises.

Where do you change into and out of your bathing suit if you are going on a bus trip? All I see is options for public showers. I don't want to sit on a bus for 3 hours with a wet bathing suit on. Please help.

Completely understand - if you are traveling as part of a group bus trip, check with your bus trip organizer.  They may have worked out something with one of the local hotels.

Otherwise, when I used to go to OC for the day (aka before kids), I would rinse all the sand off my bathing suit at one of the free rinse-off station on the boards, then just enjoy shopping and grabbing a bite to eat on the boardwalk.  By the time we left, I was dry, sand free, and completely comfortable.

I would say the Southern end of the boardwalk would be best. There is a promenade there and they have a walkway in the sand to the ocean if you wanted to be right near the water.

You can ride from 2am-11am Mon-Friday, it's till 10am on weekends.

There are several places to rent bikes along the boardwalk. Atlantic Bike Co. is on 8th street, they have a huge selection.

You can park on the side streets of Ocean city overnight and can leave you car for several days. I have done this often with no problems. Just check the street to be sure there are no posted restrictions.

Have a great trip!
