Are dogs allowed on the boardwalk?

Dogs are not allowed on the OC beach or boardwalk or beach anytime from 1 May to 30 September.

Leashed dogs are allowed in OCs parks, including Northside Park at 127th Street. There is a dog park at 94th Street. You can get more info about it here: http://ococean.com/things-to-do/oc-local-parks-and-playgrounds/ocean-city-dog-playground

Dogs are allowed in certain areas of the beach at the nearby Assateague National Seashore, but not Assateague State Park. Here is the info from the National Seashore website:

Pets are permitted in the Maryland portion of the National Seashore. All pets must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times.
Pets are completely prohibited in the following areas:
- all backcountry campsites
- nature trails
- lifeguard-protected beach
- north of the State Park to the Ocean City inlet
- the entire Virginia portion of Assateague Island*

*Pets are prohibited in the entire Virginia portion of Assateague Island, even in your car. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages nearly all of the land area on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island as a National Wildlife Refuge.

If you need a place to stay there are several pet friendly properties in OC. Here are a few:

Safari Hotel at 13th Street is ocean front on the boardwalk. (http://www.safarimotel.net)

Clarion Fontainebleau - Ocean front, 101st Street. This is a great large property with lots of amenities. Most of the rooms are ocean and bay view. (http://www.clarionoc.com/)

Barefoot Mailman - Ocean block on 35th Street. (http://www.barefootmailman.com/)

Windjammer Apartments - Ocean front, 46th Street. A nice older property with studio, 1BR, 2BR, and 3BR apartments. I stayed there for many years.

Are there beach umbrellas to rent?

You can rent from the blue rental boxes on the beach or from a rental agency like PMI on 126th Street. An umbrella from PMI is $13/day or $26 a week. An umbrella from a beach box is about $14/day or $67/week.

Obviously, renting from a rental agency will save you quite bit if you are there for a week, but you have to set it up yourself everyday. Here is PMI's rate sheet:

You can also rent form the blue boxes on the beach. They are every block or two for the whole length of the beach. You will see the blue boxes right after you cross the boardwalk on the beach. The rental umbrellas are large and provide excellent sun protection. They also have people who do the setup and take down for you! They also may be renting cabannas this year in that section of town.

Rates vary based on who is running each stand, but only a little bit. They offer daily, multi-day, and weekly rentals. Below is a picture of one of the boxes and the rate sheet from the box at 64th Street last summer. Rates should be essentially the same this year.

It is often less expensive to buy chairs and umbrellas for the week than it is to rent for the week. Of course renting an umbrella you will get a larger, heavier duty one that gives better shade and you will have someone to setup and take it down for you.

Have a great trip!

Do you need a fishing license to crab from a pier in Ocean City Maryland? Also, where is it legal to crab in OC? If staying at a place on 10th street, can I walk to the pier on bayside to crab? How would I know if the pier is "private"?

The only public piers I know of are behind the convention center and at Northside Park.  I would consider all others to be private.

Are there public showers or changing stations along the beach/boardwalk area?
Submitted by Tina K, Wernersville, on August 7, 2011

There are no public changing areas or private bath houses where you can change and take a private shower in Ocean City. You are not allowed to change clothes in the public restrooms. There are public rinse off showers to wash sand and salt water off yourself at the Inlet beach, Caroline Street, and 9th Street. These showers are on the west edge of the beach.

The nearest public bath houses are at Assateague State Park or Fenwick Island State Park.

I'm considering my first visit during the weekend of Sept. 24th. What kind of weather is typical that time of year? What's the average temp?

Hello there! I would say during the day the average temp is 75-80, sunny sometimes rainy depends on what the weather does. At night you're looking at the average temp to be about 50-60 again depends on what it does during the day. I hope this helps you. I'm sure it will be beautiful for you!
