I will be visiting Ocean City from September 20 to the 23 for Sunfest. I've lived in maryland my whole life but have only ever been to the beach to swim prior to Labor Day. Do people usually swim during this time ? I know the ocean will still be very warm, I'm just wondering about how warm the weather usually is. Thank you

I have swam in the ocean during the first weekend of October, the water is warm.... the air temp was around 70 so it was a little chilly when I got out. You should be ok to swim next week! It will probably be in the 70's- 80's

Motorcycles pay the same rate as 2-axle motor vehicles. That rate is $6 when going eastboud ($5.40 with a Maryland issued E-ZPass). There is no toll for westbound traffic. You can find out more here.

Have fun in OC - It is a great time of year to be there!

My wife and I booked a vacation in wonderful OC during the last week of October (Oct 27-Nov 2, 2013). It sounds like a majority of the Boardwalk shops are open on the weekends, but I am more concerned with during the week (Monday-Thursday). Are there still things to do in OC during that week - Boardwalk, restaurants, amusement park, putt-putt? Thank you for your time!

There will still be some things open during the week, but less than on weekends. If the weather is nice some boardwalk shops will be open during thw week. Many restaurants around town will also still be open. Here are some more ideas of things to do:

You can still find some things to do however, here are a few ideas:

Go bowling at 72nd Street Ocean Lanes. Call ahead to check for lane availability (410.524.7550) and be aware, they take cash only.

Play indoor mini golf at one of the two Old Pro Indoor Courses. They are open everyday.

Play Laser Tag at Planet Maze. They are closed Tuesday-Thursday.

Go shopping at the shops in nearby Berlin.

Go see a movie.

If it is a warm day, checkout some WWII history at Fort Miles in Lewis, DE.

Go Ice Skating or see an ice skating show at the Carousel.

Go to the Salisbury Zoo - It is about 30 miles away. It is a nice community zoo, and it is free!

Get some crabs from Crabs-to-Go or Bahama Mamas to feel a bit more like summer. Both of these places have excellent crabs year round.

Go to an Arcade - Marty's Playland is open everyday!

If the weather is nice, some of the Boardwalk shops will be open. Boardwalk favorites  Thrasher's Fries, Dumser's ice cream, Fisher's popcorn (my favorite!), Candy Kitchen are almost always open on the weekends and sometimes on weekdays. Many restaurants are open year round, but some only on weekends.

If you go to the Visitor's Center at the Convention Center, they usually have a list of what restaurants are open when for the off season and a list of things to do. Most restaurants in large hotels art open year round

I always recommend staying at a place with an indoor pool in the off season, as it provides something to do if the weather is not nice.

Have fun in OC this fall!

I prefer crossing that bridge before 8am on Saturdays. Its hard to predict how traffic will be so I try to get there as early as possible. There are a lot of places to eat breakfast after you cross it or you could just wait until you get to OC....Its about 2hours once you cross the bridge.

Is there any movement by city council to ban smoking on the beaches in OC? I don't sitting on the beach while someone has to light up. Plus using the sand as their ash tray is a filthy habit. I know they have installed butt recepticles but from what I've seen they are not being used.

Hi Rick,  As a non smoker, I tend to agree that smoking can be irritating.  There was a movement last year to introduce anti smoking beaches in OC.  I have not heard anything about it this year.  Mayor Meehan was willing to compromise and only allow smoking on certain designated areas of the beaches which I think was a fair compromise.  Mayor Meehan is sure that this will become a reality some day and he as well as I am happy about that.  Be sure that your voice is heard by writing him a letter at:

Can you recommend any good places to go kayaking in OC? Don't want to go into the ocean. Just bays and inlets. Thanks

In your question, you did not specify if you have a kayak or not.  If you do not have a kayak, go up to Northside Park up on 126th ST.  Go all the wayback pass the playground, pass the soccer fields to the bay.  You will see a huge pier going out into the bay.  Just to the left is a little beach where you can launch.  ALso, in Assateague Island, there is a water trail called the Sinepuxent Bay Water Trail.  It is just one of the many water trails in MD.  The Sinepuxent Bay Water Trails are existing routes that skirt the Assateague Island National Seashore on Chincoteague Bay. Two routes, the Old Ferry Landing Loop and the Bayside Loop can be accessed from launch sites off of Bayberry Road and Bayside Drive. Both routes circle Little Egging Island and provide opportunities too explore the marshes. For more information visit www.visitworcester.org or call 1-800-852-0335 or send an e-mail inquiry to econ@ezy.net.  Here is more information for other trails.

If you do not own a kayak, you should check out Ayers Creek Adventures which is very close to OC.

I am planning on getting married August 2014. I was wondering where on the beach would be a nice peaceful place to have an evening wedding. I was thinking about also renting a house for the weekend for my family and us to stay. Any helpful ideas? I need specific places to check out.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Yes, the beach can be a great place to have a wedding, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is low in the sky and the temperatures are cooler.Anyplace on OC's beach would be fine as it is all accessible and public.

If you are going to use the beach for your wedding, you need to coordinate a time and location with the Mayor's Office. You can call them at 410.289.8931 to do this. There is no fee. There is some more information here. There are limitations on the times you can do this, especially during the summer.

To get married in OC, you first need to apply for a Worcester County marriage license. Call the Clerk of Court Office at 410.632.5500 to find out exactly what’s required, what documents are needed, when you can apply, and how long it takes.

Depending on your needs, you may want to consider working with one of OC's wedding planning companies. They can offer you anything from just an officiant for the event to a full blown package. Here are some places that offer these services: Weddings by the Seashore 800.884.0026 Ocean City Wedding Pastor 410.603.9918 Beach Weddings by Rox 866.472.3012

As far as renting a place to stay, most places rent for the week, but you can often rent mini weeks too. I suggest working with a realtor to find a unit that meets your specific needs, dates, and budget. You can use their websites to explore options, but I'd call them and work with an agent to make a final selection. Two realtors I've used in the last few years and been very happy with are:

Coldwell Banker:  800.633.1000 http://www.cbvacations.com/

Shoreline Properties: 800.492.5832  http://www.shorepro.com/

If you are looking for hotel recommendations checkout this thread for some ideas for you and you guests. If you are looking for some places for a large group to stay together, checkout this thread. Have a great wedding in OC!

BayRunner Shuttles runs several shuttle a day from Ocean City (departing from the west OC park and ride lot and from Ocean Pines) to BWI. Cost is about $100 one way per person. You can view the schedule, stops, and rates here and make a reservation here.
