In regards to the walkway that goes from the Boardwalk toward the water, how far out does it go? We're traveling with folks who use a cane, and therefore have trouble on soft surfaces like sand. Thanks!

The length of the walkways varies block to block. I'd say as a general rule, they go about half way from the boardwalk to the ocean. In most cases, they end at least 100 feet or so from the water. The walkways south of the pier will get you closer to the water. than the ones to the north of the pier. In the image below, I added red lines showing where the walkways end (the walkway north of the pier on the right of the photo is typical to the walkways further north than is shown ion this photo). Note that I took this picture at close to low tide; at high tide, the water will be closer to the walkways.

Below 2nd street the walkway extends about halfway to the beach.  There are no walkways further north.  You can also enter the beach from the inlet parking.  That is a short walk.

The walkway only goes so far out and stops.  But there are beach wheelchairs that you can reserve to use for free.  The only restriction is that you don't take the chairs into the water and that they are returned when you are finished using  them.  All of the information about reserving a chair or two can be found here https://oceancitymd.gov/oc/city-hall/americans-with-disabilities/
