Hi Insiders! I was wondering if you could tell me if there have been any sharks spotted near the beach in OCMD? If so, what kind of sharks were spotted?

There have not been any sighted ever while we have been on the beach.  Sometimes the fin of a ray can be seen and that kind of looks like a shark, but there are typically no sharks sighted.  There are definitely sharks in the water - it is the ocean.  One amazing statistic that I hear every year is that Maryland has never had a reported shark attack.  It is the only state on the east coast to claim this.  You can see people catch sand sharks off the beach at night and you can take a shark boat out of MR Ducks that catches and releases sharks.  They go several miles off-shore though.  I do not think you have anything to fear.

Yes, sharks have occasionally been spotted near OCMD, including a Hammerhead shark that was spotted in the inlet area a few years ago. A couple of years ago some kids caught some fair sized Sand-Tiger sharks while surf fishing. Smaller sharks, usually less than 20" long are common in the surf.

If you are concerned about shark attacks, have no fear. I am fairly certain that there are no documented cases of any shark attacks on OC's beaches for OC's entire 125+ year history and believe this lack of documented attacks is also true for the entire Atlantic Coastline between the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays.

Here's OC's most famous shark:

Robert,  I've seen fisherman real small sand sharks while they surf fish in the morning or later afternoon. In saying that, always check with your lifeguard and be alert when swimming in the ocean.

A little hint I was told if you do see dolphins in the water it's a good sign there are no big shark around .

Sharks, like any fish, are always in the waters off of Ocean City, including some of the larger ones.  Tiger sharks, and various species are often caught, and the government keeps track of the larger sharks who have been tagged.  In the event any of them come close to the shore, the lifeguards will immediately get people out of the water for their safety.  In all of the years I've been in the water in OC, I've never seen a shark nearby or told to get out of the water. I have seen several caught by fishermen off the pier though.  You're really perfectly safe swimming in OC. We have the BEST lifeguards anywhere.

Hi Robert,

Sand sharks are the only sharks that I have ever seen in my 48 years of going to Ocean City and many, many hours in the water.

Enjoy!

the only shark that I have ever seen in OC is the cute little sand sharks which are harmless.  There have been shark sightings but it is extremely rare to see them especially with the abundance of dolphins off shore which tends to keep them away.
