Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum offers free admission May 18

Ocean City, MD - In recognition of International Museum Day, the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum is offering free admission to the museum all day on Monday, May 18. The public is encouraged to visit the historic building and its many interesting exhibits. The museum is located on the Boardwalk at the Inlet and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day.

The main exhibit entitled "Wreck in the Offing" tells of the heroic actions of the United States Life-Saving Service on the barrier islands of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. Over 7,500 shipwrecked persons were saved from 300 maritime disasters along the coast of Ocean City and adjacent islands. The exhibit tells of the many courageous efforts by these "surfmen" against the forces of nature.

The International Council of Museums launched International Museum Day in 1977. The aim of this annual event is to raise public awareness of the vital role museums play in society. Each year the advisory committee decides on a theme for this special day of celebration. This year's theme is intended to emphasize how museums can make a tourism experience more meaningful by enhancing understanding of a particular place.

"Museums and Tourism encourages museum professionals and volunteers to work together with visitors and tourists, creating interactions with local communities in order to experience heritage both inside and outside of the museum walls," said Alissandra Cummins, president of the International Council of Museums.

The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum is housed in one of the oldest existing structures in Ocean City, which once served both the United States Life-Saving Service and the Coast Guard for the purpose of aiding victims of sea disasters. Displays include marine aquariums, sands of the world, antique bathing fashions, a mermaid collection, shipwreck artifacts and much more. New this season is "The Boardwalk of Yesterday" showcasing the history of Ocean City's famous promenade.
