Most clothing offers a fairly significant level of UV protection, but if you want extra protection, with specific UV-blocking characteristics ,I'd suggest trying one of the local surf shops. Here are some solid options that will likely have what you want:

There is a tram that runs the 2.5 miles of the boardwalk and is handicap accessible. There is a fee per boarding per person.  Or you can rent motorized scooters from several of the bicycle rental shops along the boards as well.  You can get use of a wheelchair for free by contacting the Ocean City Police Dept.  or you can check here for a mobility scooter rental http://www.rentittoday.com/medical-equipment-rentals/Ocean-City-MD-Mobility-Scooter-Rental-5562

Coming from northern NJ with 5 young children to OC. What do you think is the best way to do the trip? What are the better times of the day to leave? Or am I better taking the ferry?

From Northern NJ I would not recommend taking the ferry unless you want to do it just for the experience.

All Driving:

Get to the New Jersey Turnpike South.

Take the New Jersey Turnpike South to the end and cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Go about 4 Miles in Delaware and get off onto US 13 South / US 40 West towards Dover.

Continue on US 13 South about 10 miles until you reach Delaware Route 1 South.

Stay on Route 1 about 50 miles until you reach Route 113. Take 113 South towards Milford or Georgetown. Continue on Route 113 South about 43 miles into Maryland.

About 8 miles after entering Maryland get onto Route 90 East.

Route 90 will take you about 4 miles into Ocean City at 62nd Street.

The NJ Turnpike, Delaware Memorial Bridge, and Delaware Route 1 are all toll roads.

The route above should take about 4.5 hours from New York City.

Via Ferry:

If you decide you want the more interesting ride, you can take the Cape May, NJ - Lewis, DE Ferry. This trip may be more scenic, but likely will take longer. If you take the ferry be sure to make a reservation in advance. To take this route, take the NJ Turnpike to the Garden State Parkway South. Take the Garden State Parkway all the way to Cape May, NJ and follow the signs for the ferry. Take the Ferry to Lewis, DE and then follow the signs to head south to OC. It is about 35 miles from Lewis to OC and will take a little less than an hour to get from Lewis to OC. More ferry information can be found at: http://www.capemaylewesferry.com/. If you go this way definitely make a reservation for the ferry.

Avoiding Traffic

Traffic depends on what day you are arriving. You want to avoid arriving in OC between 4pm and 8pm on Fridays or between 11am and 5pm on Saturdays.

Have a great trip!

Just about every hotel will give you a parking pass so you can park and enjoy the beach or boardwalk till your room is ready. Just go to the front desk and tell them your early and ask for a pass.

Yes they are but just remember to make sure you set them up a little back so you don't  block the

lifeguards view up and down the beach. ( or they will make you move it)

Also, make sure you anchor it well as I've seen many roll away up the beach.

No, you cannot. According the the Maryland DMV:

"Off-road vehicles are those that you can't operate on public roadways. Such vehicles include all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, golf carts, and go-carts."

There are not week long bus passes available. The exceptions are Senior Citizen passes and week long passes for graduates offered for $5 as part of the Play-it-Safe campaign.

Jeff,

I would say yes, but use your common sense as to getting on to a crowded bus...... make sure you have good hold of them or stowed properly and securely.

They have a nice one at Sam's Club right now for $20.  If you want one in Ocean City, try Roses, Walmart, or Sunsations.  Just make sure you get a vented umbrella.

If you want the bombdidally umbrella, try Hit The Deck in Fenwick Island.  They sell the premium canvas ones for about $150.  They should last 10 - 15 years.
