Hi there! What would you say is the average cost for a family of 5 for a week long vacation in mid-June? We're hoping to stay at a beachfront hotel, and I want to make sure we budget an appropriate amount of money. What are some free activities we could do while we're down there?

The OC Air Show is scheduled for the weekend of June 15-16 and while you can purchase tickets to be front and center, it is still a great event to enjoy for free pretty much anywhere in town. Also, you could probably save a bit of money by considering options on the bayside as well. Have a great trip!

I can give you some insight on dining and entertainment.  I allocate $20 per person for dinner, $15 per person for lunch and $10 per person for breakfast at a nice restaurant.  Keep in mind there are lots of deli/pizza/hamburger options that can feed your family for $30 - $40.  You can also buy groceries and cook some meals in - breakfast is an easy meal to eat in.  We have three wonderful daughters who spend about $100 on the Boardwalk for treats, rides and having fun.  I would figure two or three trips to Boardwalk.

A lot depends the amenities you want at the palace you stay, but I'll assume something mid-range. For 5 people staying for a week, I'd suggest renting a condo as that will give you more space (including a full kitchen) and probably be the most affordable option. A 2BR oceanfront condo will be $1200 to $1600 (or more if you want more luxury) for the week in mid June. I'll go with $1500 to cover taxes and fees. Oceanfront hotels will be roughly the same, but on the higher end of this cost. If you are interested in the condo option, three realtors I have used and that I routinely recommend are:

    Condo Realty: 410.723.0988

    Coldwell Banker:  800.633.1000

    Shoreline Properties: 800.492.5832

You can do research on these agency's site and also contact a realtor directly. There are more options for rental agencies on the OCOcean rentals page. The OCOcean accommodations page is also a good source for references and ideas.

Food will cost you at least $25/person per day unless you totally eat in. It is very easy to make this close to $75/day per person or more if you go out for nice dinners and drinks. I'd go with a minimum of about $1000 (or more) for food for the week.

Entertainment can easily be free between the boardwalk, beach, and free events (there are tons of them in season), but I'll add $250 for amusement parks, arcades, boardwalk food, or other entertainment.

Add it all up and you get at least $2750 for 7 days. You can go for less, but not a lot less, and it is easy to double or triple this number with an larger or more luxurious room in a high end hotel or condo or dinners at nicer restaurants each night.

Checkout this thread for some other estimates, details, and ways to save money.

There will be a few free activities, but most of them get underway in July. See the OCOcean events page and the free family fun page for some ideas.

It all depends on things you like to do that determines how much to save for.

(i.e. food, games, entertainment )

For example: I usually book what they call mini weeks (Mon-Fri). I can spend $1000-1500 for accommodations depending on many factors. ( hotel/condo/locations) I've seen condos for a lot cheaper than that but I like to be ocean front.

I also save $1000 for food, games, entertainment and so on for that week. I like to hit the boardwalk during the evening to play games, buy t-shirts and so forth.

The number one free activity in Ocean City is the beach. It doesn't cost a penny to enjoy the ocean and play in the sand. You can't beat that deal any day.
