I want to spend a day at Assateague Island. When is the best time to go and see the ponies?

Hey Michelle, the best time is the morning and the afternoon. Just remember do not feed or pet the horses. or you can also take a boat ride on the Assateague Adventurer. visit http://www.ococean.com for more info as well.

One of the easiest ways to see the ponies is to take a trip on the Assateague Adventure.  It leaves out of the Talbot Street Pier and makes a trip to the island.  We have always seen the ponies on the trip.  We have always seen the ponies when we drive to Assateague as well.  I would say they are common to see.

Almost anytime is good to see the horses at Assateague National Seashore or State Park. I have seen them morning, mid-day, and in the evening.

Hi.  Seeing the ponies is hit and miss.  They are on the entire island, not just in one spot.  There is no one specific time or place that will guarantee you see them.  But you can drive around on the free streets around the island, or you can park at the pay lot and cross the dunes to the beach and you'll have a better chance of seeing some.  Do not attempt to pet or feed the horses though. These are wild animals and they do kick and bite.
