We're staying at Fager's Island from May 16-May 20. What is the weather typically like at this time? What should we do while we're in town?Submitted by Kim Y, Jim Thorpe PA on April 11, 2019
hey kim, usually that time of year is warm and sunny but you can head over to http://www.ococean.com for the local weather forecast or you can check before you leave for OC as well. that's when Cruisin OC is so be prepared for a lot of traffic that weekend.
Great hotel! The weather should be warm and sunny - highs in the 80's. The water will still be in the 60's though. About 95% of the stores, shops and restaurants should be open. The Boardwalk shops should be open on daily. Walking the Boardwalk and the beach are fun activities. You can also play mini golf at over 20 different courses; there is go kart racing in West Ocean City; and, there are two great movie theaters. I highly recommend dinner at Seacrets, Fager's Island, BJ's On the Water and Big Peckers. You can eat outside and enjoy the Spring weather.
I am often in OC at this time of year for Cruise Weekend. The weather is generally sunny in the high 70s or low 80s. It is warm enough to spend some time on the beach mid-day and plenty warm enough to spend most of the day outside with long sleeves or a light jacket.
While you are in town enjoy the cars at Cruisin' OC.
Check and see if there are any special events planned that might interest you. You can always see what is going on at the OCOcean Events page.
Here are some more ideas of things to do:
Many boardwalk businesses are open year round. Thrasher's Fries, Dumser's ice cream, Fisher's popcorn (my favorite!), Candy Kitchen will be open when you are there. Marty's Playland, my favorite arcade, is open almost everyday year round!
It should be warm enough to play mini golf at one of the Old Pro Courses, but if it is chilly, you can play at an indoor course. Old Pro is open daily at 68th and 136th Streets. These two locations both have indoor and outdoor courses and are open year-round.
Visit Baja Amusements on West OC - They will likely have several go cart tracks running everyday.
Go Ice Skating at the Carousel.
Take a trip down to Assateague. It is only about a 15 minute drive. There is a great Visitor's Center on the right. It has lots of great interactive and touch-type exhibits that kids love. It also has a few short interesting movies about Assateague. You can drive a fair distance on Assateague before entering the fee area and I almost always see the horses in the free area. There are some great short easy hikes in the fee area that you may want to consider if the weather is nice.
You can also head west to go to the Salisbury Zoo - It is about 30 miles away. It is a nice community zoo, and it is free!
You can go to the Delmarva Discovery Center (410.957.9933) to learn about the area's natural and cultural history. It is about 40 miles from OC.
If you like art, take a trip to the Art League Gallery on 94th Street. I go here almost every time I am in town. Their exhibits change monthly, and I always find something interesting to look at there, plus it is FREE.
If you want to try something different, take a kayak trip in the Coastal Bays. I've been out several times with Assateague Outfitters (410.656.9453). They do a great job and the trips are a lot of fun. Plus, you will see the famous Assateague wild horses! No experience required. I've been out with people from age 8 (he was fine in his Dad's kayak, and the 10-year-old was fine in his own kayak) to age 70 and everyone had a great time! I was out one year in mid-April and it was plenty warm enough for one of these trips. Since the bay is rarely more than a couple of feet deep, it warms up quickly.
If you are golfers, OC has lots of great courses. If you get a warmer day, it will still be fun to golf. If some of you are novice golfers, try Ocean Resort Golf Club. They are a course that works well for both less proficient golfers (like me), and for more experienced ones too (like the crew I head down with every year).
Checkout the interesting shops in nearby Berlin.
If you like history definitely visit the OC Lifesaving Museum at the south end of the boardwalk. If it is a nice day, consider a drive up to Fort Miles in Lewis Delaware to see the restored Coastal Defenses and go up in one of the Fire Control Towers for a spectacular view.
I always recommend staying at a place with an indoor pool in the off season, as it provides something to do if the weather is not nice.
Hi. Wow, be prepared because that's Cruisin' Ocean City weekend and the town will be packed. But what a great time to come! You will have plenty to do and see and experience. There will be car shows at the Convention Center on 40th Street and the biggest one is at the inlet parking lot. A parade of cars is held each morning beginning at 8 a.m. on the boardwalk. There are lots of vendors at both locations. And there is a custom car show inside the Convention Center along with a lot of vendors too. The town will be bustling so believe me you won't be bored.
As for the weather, we've attended this show (same weekend every year) for over 20 years. Usually the weather is fantastic, sunny and warm (70's), but there have been times when it's been in the 60's, and one year I actually had to go and buy a coat while there. Best thing to do is to check the weather forecast a day or two before arriving and pack accordingly.
The weather can be very nice during May. Obviously the ocean water will be too cold to swim in but you can still enjoy a beach day.
