My advice is to always swim close to a lifeguard.  You can typically find space on the beach close to one to set-up for the day.  We always walk right in front of the lifeguard when we swim.  They are your best ally at the beach!

I'm going to guess the lifeguards are spread out about ever 200 yards during the summer starting Memorial Day weekend. Ocean City Lifeguards are trained and prepared well.

During the summer lifeguards are stationed for the entire 10-mile stretch of OC's beach. Their stands are generally spaced 1 to 3 blocks apart, depending on the time of the season and how busy the beach is in their area. Guards go on duty Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and remain on duty everyday until the Sunday of Sunfest weekend in late September. They are on duty from 10am to 5:30pm.
